On The Spot
Hobbies: I’m a very lazy person when I’m not playing cricket. I spend time with my friends and I love driving but I don’t get too many chances to drive; if there is tennis going on I will definitely watch it, especially if Roger Federer is playing. I’m a big fan of his because you can get motivated by watching the way he goes about his game. I don’t miss his games.
Favourite Movie(s): I’m not a big movie man but I’d say Sadma and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
Favourite Movie Star(s): Amitabh Bachchan; Arnold Schwarzenegger; Angelina Jolie; Sushmita Sen.
Favourite Music Act(s): Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; Gurdas Maan. I like a lot of Punjabi music.
Favourite Food: I’m not really fussy about food, I eat anything but I do like Thai food in particular.
Favourite Drink: Water. I drink a lot of water because it keeps me in good shape. If you drink a lot of water, your body will react well.
Favourite Holiday Destination: It depends who you are there with. If I’m going with friends, I would say Australia. If I was with my soul mate, which I am yet to find, I would say the Caribbean or the Maldives.
Favourite Ground: Eden Gardens, Calcutta for the atmosphere and Sydney.
Least Favourite Ground: Lahore and Faisalabad because the wickets there do not encourage bowlers. The grounds are beautiful but the wickets are just not up to the mark for Test cricket. There should always be something there for the bowlers.
Most Memorable Match: The Calcutta Test against Australia in 2001 but the whole series was great.
Match You Most Want to Forget: The first two Test matches in Pakistan in 2006, Lahore and Faisalabad. I would never suggest any bowler to play there! Dennis Lillee said after playing there that his graveyard would be in Lahore, and he was right. I believe every bowler’s graveyard should be there!
Your Cricket Heroes: Steve Waugh because he was a great player and had the heart of a lion. He was not only a great player he’s also a great human being. On the field he was a fighter, which is how I try to play. I would also say Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev.
Greatest Influence: My family, particularly my (late) father Sardev Singh.
Favourite Non-Cricketing Sportsman: Roger Federer for the reasons above; also Ronaldinho because he has God-gifted skills and is amazing to watch.
Toughest Opponent: Anybody can be a tough opponent in any match but if I had to name one I would say Steve Waugh because once he was set he would not give you a chance to get him out. I would also say Brian Lara, he’s so good that you have to be very lucky or playing above yourself to get him out when he’s in form.
Best Friend(s) in Cricket: Ashish Nehra, Yuvraj Singh.
Funniest Man in Cricket: People say me, but I would say Tino Best. He seems a great character and although I don’t know him much, I imagine he’s great fun in the dressing room.
Funniest Man in the World: Jim Carrey.
Most Embarrassing Moment: I was playing an Under-16 state match and I suddenly had stomach cramps in the middle of an over I was bowling. I had to throw the ball down and rush to the toilet, without having enough time to inform the umpire what I was doing. That was very embarrassing.
If You Weren’t a Cricketer…: I started Test cricket at 17 so I don’t know what else I could have been.
Greatest Skill That May Surprise Us: Well, I keep control well when I am angry. I’m not very good at cooking though I can make a good tea and coffee or an omelette.
